What's New in Summer 2021 Release

    Dimensions

Added the ability to turn Dimensions enhancement on or off in the SL Overlay Setup page. See: Enable or Disable Shortcut Dimensions

    Correcting Journal Entries feature

Currently in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central,, users need to create a correcting entry to replace an original entry reversed using the Reverse Transaction functionality. With the SL Overlay Correcting Journal Entries feature the reversing entry is moved to a General Journal batch where the user has the ability to see the reversing entry and edit it before posting.

    Correcting Journal Entries

Created Date field for Documents, Journals and Master Records

The SL Overlay Created Date enhancement has added fields for Created Date, Last Modified By, Date Posted, and Last Modified Date to documents, journals and master record cards and related tables.

Module Menu Maintenance - Copy Menu

When you wish to copy an already existing menu from one user to different users, the Copy Menu enhancement in the SL Overlay adds the ability for an SL Overlay (SLO) Admin to copy an existing menu in the Module Menu Maintenance page and assign the copied menu to one or more users.

Add Purchase Order Number field to Get Receipt Lines page

The new SL Overlay Purchase Order Number field enhancement extends the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central functionality to include the Purchase Order number that is associated with the retrieved receipts lines on the Get Receipt Lines page.

Vendor and Customer default G/L Accounts

The SL Overlay Vendor/Customer Default G/L Accounts enhancement provides a field on the Customer and Vendor Cards for users to designate a default G/L Account to populate on sales and purchase documents when the Type of G/L Account is selected on the lines.

    Vendor/Customer Default G/L Accounts

    Default G/L Account Type

The SL Overlay Default Account Type enhancement provides a way to designate a default Account Type in both the General Ledger Setup, and in the User Setup page to populate a default Type in new sales and purchase documents during data entry.

    Reports

Dynamics SL users are used to using certain reports that are not natively found in Dynamics 365 Business Central. In order to make the transition to Dynamics 365 Business Central easier, we redesigned several reports to make them more similar to Dynamics SL reports, and we added the new functionality to filter on Shortcut Dimensions and Fiscal Period. We also created a new SL Permissions Comparison report to help troubleshoot permission issues in Dynamics 365 Business Central.

    Missing Key Fields Notification

Topics include a list of all notifications that can be enable or disabled that alert you when key fields in setup screens are missing data.

Expanding the functionality of Shortcut Dimensions

Dynamics 365 Business Central limits the ability to filter on Dimensions 3-8. With the SL Overlay, Shortcut Dimensions 3-8 are added to various setup screens and reports and can now be used in filters as standalone filters, independent of the Global Dimensions.

    Topics include:

    • Analyzing by Dimensions
    • Dimension Sets
    • Setting Up Dimensions
    • To set up default dimensions for customers, vendors, and other accounts
    • To set up global and shortcut dimensions
    • Using Dimensions with the SL Overlay
    • To view global and shortcut dimensions in ledger entry pages
    • Shortcut Dimensions and Trial Balance Report

    GL Register enhancements

SL users are accustomed to processing data entry in batches, with multiple documents per batch. Users are then able to reference the batch for later review, based on the batch and reference numbers of the documents in the batch. The GL Register Enhancement provides an easier way for SL users to access ledger entries they created in Business Central D365 with links to the Vendor and Customer List pages, and the addition of a Created By User ID field in the G/L Register. This Created by User ID field lets users filter ledger entries based on their User ID, thus emulating the batch retrieval experience with which they are familiar.

In addition, new fields in data entry pages provide batch control total checking, like those found in SL screens. These fields allow the user to enter a control total of all documents before data entry begins. A second field provides a total that is incremented as data entry occurs. A third field tracks the difference between the control total and the incremented total and alerts the user of any differences so that edits can be made before completing data entry.

Add Fiscal Period and Close Period functionality

Dynamics SL users are accustomed to using a Period to Post field, whereas in Dynamics 365 Business Central, a posting date range is used to determine whether data entry can continue for a specific date range. The SL Overlay Fiscal Period enhancement adds a Current Period field in the Role Center headlines, Accounting Periods and in data entry pages. This assists users with the transition to using Fiscal Date ranges by adding the display of a Dynamics SL period formatted as MM-YYYY to the Accounting Periods, the Role Center, and data entry pages).

    Adding batch processing functionality

Dynamics SL users are accustomed to processing data entry in batches, with multiple documents per batch. Users were then able to reference the batch for later review, based on the batch and reference numbers of the documents in the batch.

The batch concept is present in Business Central D365 General Journal. The user may create multiple journal entries within the batch. Creating a personal batch with a related number series in Business Central provides the user with a similar experience of processing transactions in a secluded batch, specific to a User ID. The user may review the entries later in the G/L Register by searching by User ID, Source No., Creation Date, etc.

However, documents created in Dynamics 365 Business Central are stored on a list page that commingles all documents prepared by all users in the list. Each document is created individually. There is a process on the list page to post a batch which allows the user to filter on documents and post those ready to be posted at once, but does not allow a user to post only the batches they themselves created.

    SL Terminology Changes

The SL Overlay SL Terminology enhancement modifies some Dynamics D365 Business Central screen names, fields and reports to the most common SL screens, fields and report names. This allows the Dynamics SL user to more quickly become familiar with Dynamics 365 Business Central and make the transition from Dynamics SL to Dynamics 365 Business Central easier.

    Tile-Based Menu Navigation

Dynamics SL users are accustomed to navigating to screens, processes and reports by way of a hierarchically structured menu system that is role and module based. Dynamics 365 Business Central uses a search-based system where the user can type a menu item in the Quick Access pane, but the user cannot easily see which screens or reports they have access to view or use. To make the transition to Dynamics 365 Business Central easier, the SL Overlay created a tile/role based menu system along with a new page for Admins to create and preview custom user menus.
